Barnes & Noble Opens Largest Valley Location in Brownsville

A Big Day for Local Readers & Book Lovers

On Monday, Brownsville celebrated the opening of the largest Barnes & Noble in the Rio Grande Valley at Sunrise Mall. The event kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by special guest author Anamely Salgado Reyes, following welcoming remarks from Brownsville City Manager Helen Ramirez. Ramirez thanked everyone involved in bringing the store to life and highlighted Barnes & Noble’s recognition of the community’s growing need for a major bookstore.

A First Look Inside

After the ribbon-cutting, the public was invited inside to explore the new space and yes, it does have a café. Along with books, the store offers an array of gifts for all ages, perfect for the holiday shopping season.

One highlight for me was the impressive selection of Spanish-language books, which feels like a thoughtful reflection of our community. If you’re looking for your next great read in Spanish, this is definitely worth checking out.

Meeting Author Anamely Salgado Reyes

Anamely held her book signing that morning, so naturally I picked up a copy to add to my ever-growing TBR list (I will get to it!). I also got the chance to take a picture with her; she’s incredibly warm, gracious, and friendly. Anamely is from the RGV, specifically Weslaco, which made the event feel even more special.

Don’t Forget Local Gems: Búho Bookstore

Amid the excitement of welcoming a big chain bookstore, it’s important to remember that Búho in downtown Brownsville is still going strong. I’ve visited many times, and it remains a lovely, locally owned shop with a wonderful mix of new and classic titles.

If you’re searching for a book they don’t have in stock, Gilbert, the owner, will happily order it. Búho also hosts author events, workshops, and book club meetings, another great way to stay connected with the local literary community.
