Matilda the Musical: A Story That Continues to Inspire
Matilda the Musical endures because it blends rebellious joy with genuine emotional depth. Based on Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, the show celebrates intelligence, courage, and the power of standing up for oneself, timeless themes that resonate across generations. Its soundtrack is mischievous and heartfelt, capturing childhood wonder while acknowledging real struggles. Inventive choreography and imaginative staging immerse audiences in Matilda’s world, making every performance feel vibrant and immediate. Most importantly, the story champions kindness and inner strength, offering a hopeful message that continues to connect with children and adults alike.
This month, Matilda the Musical comes to the Camille Playhouse, with opening night set for Friday, December 12 at 7 p.m.
About the Story
MATILDA follows the journey of an extraordinary little girl with extraordinary powers. The daughter of abusive parents, Matilda escapes into library books and the stories she creates. School offers little refuge, as she must also face Miss Trunchbull, Crunchem Hall’s tyrannical headmistress who proudly lives by the motto “Bambinatum est Magitum” (“Children are Maggots”). (Camille Playhouse, 2025)
Matilda finds companionship in her gentle teacher, Miss Honey, who is well-intentioned but shy and fragile. Realizing that the adults around her will not change, Matilda decides to take a stand. In doing so, she discovers not only her courage but her remarkable powers. Music & lyrics by Tim Minchin and book by Dennis Kelly.
