Big Green Fun in the RGV: Shrek the Musical Hits Harlingen

Looking for a little magic (and a lot of laughs) this week? Dust off your swamp ears. The Harlingen Community Theatre has officially kicked off its latest production: Shrek the Musical. (Harlingen Community Theatre, 2026)

Whether you’re a fan of the original 2001 DreamWorks classic or just looking for a high-energy night out with the family, this stage adaptation brings the beloved story to life with heart, humor, and a whole lot of green.

About the Show

Based on the Oscar-winning film, Shrek the Musical features a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and a vibrant score by Jeanine Tesori. It follows everyone’s favorite ogre on a whirlwind quest to rescue a princess, accompanied by a very talkative Donkey.

While you’ll see all your favorite characters like Fiona and Lord Farquaad, the stage version adds new songs and depth that make this fairytale feel fresh all over again.

The show opened on February 27 and is running for a limited engagement through March 8, 2026. Don’t miss your chance to see it!

Supporting Local Talent

The Harlingen Community Theatre is a non-profit powerhouse in the Rio Grande Valley, producing 4–5 Broadway-quality shows every year. What makes it special? Every performer you see on stage, from the smallest fairytale creature to Shrek himself, is local RGV talent.

Want to get involved? The theater is always looking for community members to join the family.

  • Auditions: Usually held 8–12 weeks before a show opens.
  • Volunteer: If the spotlight isn’t for you, there are plenty of opportunities to help out behind the scenes.
