Something Beautiful is Coming to Harlingen: Once on This Island Jr.

🎭 Get ready for a magical weekend of theater! The Harlingen Community Theatre is thrilled to present Once on This Island Jr. for four shows only, running from Friday, June 26 through Sunday, June 28.

Licensed by Music Theatre International (MTI), this 60-minute, Calypso-flavored musical is a beloved favorite among youth theater programs. It adapts the Broadway hit and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid into a vibrant, fast-paced production perfect for audiences of all ages. Books and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty.

🌴 The Story: Can Love Conquer Death?

Set on a vibrant island in the French Antilles, a group of storytellers waiting out a terrible storm come together to share a legendary tale of love, bravery, and strength.

Enter Ti Moune, a young peasant girl and orphan chosen by the Gods. Though raised by a simple and loving adoptive family, she has always felt destined for something more. When a wicked storm causes a terrible accident, Ti Moune rescues a handsome, ailing stranger named Daniel from the wealthy side of the island.

As she desperately tries to nurse him back to health, she catches the attention of the island’s fantastical gods:

• Asaka: Mother of the Earth
• Agwé: God of Water
• Erzulie: Goddess of Love
• Papa Ge: Demon of Death

The gods manipulate the young lovers’ fates, testing whether love is truly stronger than death. To save Daniel’s life, Ti Moune strikes a bargain that requires the ultimate sacrifice, sending her on an unforgettable quest.
