About the Show Based on Puccini’s beloved opera La Bohème, RENT follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished, artistic friends living in Manhattan’s East Village under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, struggles to find his place in the world, while his roommate Roger, an HIV-positive musician, yearns to leave a lasting legacy. Mimi and Angel search for true love amidst harsh realities, while the pragmatic Joanne seeks fidelity from her wild performance artist girlfriend, Maureen. Together, their dreams, losses, and love stories weave a raw and emotional portrait of late-1980s bohemian New York City.
