Celebrating Imagination, Heritage, and the Many Worlds of the Borderlands

This Hispanic Heritage Month, the San Benito Cultural Arts Department invites the community to experience two exhibitions celebrating the creativity, cultural traditions, and imaginative worlds connecting Mexico, South Texas, and the borderlands:

• Entre Nahuales y Criaturas Fantásticas: The Imagined World of Manuel Miranda
• Frontera Fantástica: Creatures Between Worlds

Through the work of artists spanning generations and traditions, these exhibitions invite us to reflect on transformation, cultural memory, identity, and the ways stories cross borders to take on new forms. (San Benito Cultural Arts Department, 2026)

Entre Nahuales y Criaturas Fantásticas: The Imagined World of Manuel Miranda

Step into the realm of Mexican-born artist Manuel Miranda, where the boundaries between the human, the animal, and the fantastical shift. Born in San Ángel, Mexico City, in 1935, Miranda has spent over six decades developing a unique visual language through painting, drawing, and illustration.

Drawing heavily from the Mesoamerican concept of the nahual, a figure rooted in transformation between human and animal forms, as well as physical and spiritual worlds, Miranda’s work mirrors the borderlands experience. For those moving fluidly between languages, cultures, and communities, his fantastic beings offer a playful yet thoughtful look at how we adapt while staying rooted in our heritage. At 91 years old, Miranda continues to create, making this exhibition a tribute to a lifelong dedication to art.

Frontera Fantástica: Creatures Between Worlds

Presented in partnership with South Texas College, Frontera Fantástica brings the fantastical spirit of Mexican alebrijes into conversation with the creative energy of the Rio Grande Valley.

Featuring sculptures and paintings of dreamlike creatures inspired by traditional Mexican folk art, the exhibition shows how unexpected combinations of animals, colors, and forms transform the familiar into something entirely new. Along the border, where cultures, languages, and histories meet, these fantastical beings show how creativity flourishes in the space between traditions.
